In an effort to better plan and help staff prepare for your child, USD 444 has decided to have a 2 hour late start on Wednesdays during the month of December. It will be re-evaluated after the next 3 weeks. School will start at 10:10 a.m. with buses running two hours late on December 2nd, 9th, and 16th. The staff appreciates your understanding as we continue in our effort to have students in person and to better plan for remote learners. Breakfast will not be served on these days. A.M. Pre-K class will have the option of attending with the P.M. Pre-K class on these days from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

As most of you are aware the KSHSAA Board of Directors voted to NOT allow fans into the gym for winter competition. The district will continue its effort to advocate for our kids and families. All home games including Varsity, JV, and Jr. High will be live-streamed on the NFHS network. You can subscribe for a yearly fee or a monthly fee, but there is a cost. Visit www.NFHSnetwork.com - Search for Little River, and Subscribe and Follow. Please follow the Little River High School home page at www.usd444.com and the LRJSH facebook page for links and information regarding away games. We are very disappointed in the decision, but are happy our kids can continue to play.

Please note: The LRJSH Winter/Christmas Music Program scheduled for Dec. 14th is going to be something different this year. Mr. Dohe will be preparing recordings of the music they have been working on. Music students will have the ability to share these with their families. Parents and families, please ask your student to share the recordings with you. We anticipate the recordings will be ready by Dec. 14th. Thank you for your understanding during this time.

Sub-State KSHSAA Safety Guidelines
Event Attendance
ATTENDANCE AT POSTSEASON EVENTS: limited to no more than 50% of the arena/facility capacity. Little River Gymnasium capacity is 1,100. I believe we can stay within the 550 if only teams/fans of teams playing are in attendance. VERY IMPORTANT, fans should not arrive until immediately prior to their team’s scheduled match time. Matches will start no earlier than the scheduled time. Once spectators are done watching participant/team or when they are done competing or eliminated from the event, spectators should leave the facility in a timely manner. This will take great cooperation and communication of all administration and schools competing at the Little River Sub-State. All help is appreciated with following this guideline so that we do not have to limit spectators wanting to support their teams. A bracket with match times will be posted Wednesday, Oct. 21 at kshsaa.org. We will have personnel in place to adhere to the expected KSHSAA attendance guidelines, and this could involve holding spectators outside prior to the start of matches if needed.
Masks/Social Distancing
• All spectators will be required to wear a mask while in attendance at the event.
• At least 6’ of social distancing is to be observed while in attendance. Family members may sit together in a pod but must wear a mask.
• Participants may, but are not required to, wear a mask while competing or during warm-up.
• When participants are done competing, they will wear a mask while seated on the bench and between matches.
• It is the coach’s responsibility to enforce the wearing of masks by their players when not actively participating.
• Tournament managers will monitor spectators. Spectators choosing not to wear a mask once admitted will be reminded to wear the mask. Those refusing will be asked to leave the event.
• When eating or drinking, masks can be removed, however, masks cannot remain off until the entire beverage is consumed. It is to be worn when not drinking.
• Please maintain 6’ social distancing at the concession stand area and when using the restrooms.

USD 444 Food Service Update
USDA announced to extend free meals to students through December 31, 2020, or until federal money expires. What does this mean for USD 444 Little River? It means ALL students attending and enrolled in USD 444 Little River will begin to receive free meals, which includes breakfast and lunch, effective Tuesday, September 8, 2020. Additionally, students will have to pay for seconds at the jr./sr. high school. Any student meal account that has an outstanding balance prior to September 8, 2020, will still need to be paid accordingly.
Any remote learning students will need to notify the school by 9:00 a.m. if they would like to receive the free meals and will be responsible for picking up the meals at the school that is closest to your residence between 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
District families still need to fill out the free/reduced application because meals after December 31, 2020, or when the program ends, will be charged according to their student meal status. The free/reduced application is also needed on file for families to possibly qualify for free textbook fees and school band instrument fees. This application helps our district receive additional state funding needed to provide resources for our students.

This year there are different guideline expectations when we travel for sporting events and activities. The guidelines will be posted on the Little River School website under NEWS, and the guidelines will also be posted on the Little River Facebook page. We will do our best to communicate these guidelines in a timely manner. Tonight for football at Peabody, there are not any attendance restrictions, but masks are required in certain areas (entrance, concession stand, restrooms) and social distancing is encouraged. Again, please see the website or Facebook for the specific details.

Re: LRHS Class of 2020 Graduation.
The Rice County Health Department and USD #444 administration have collaborated and approved the following plan. The LRHS Class of 2020 commencement ceremony will take place on July 18th at 3:00pm in the LRHS Gym given that the current situation remains “as is” as of today, July 9, 2020. The following guidelines will be in place.
Graduation practice for all seniors will be on Friday, July 17th at 5:00pm. It is required for graduates to attend. Practice should take approximately 45 minutes. Graduates are encouraged to wear a mask at practice but not required.
Graduates will be allowed to bring approximately ten guests. We will cap the ceremony at 250 people. The number of guests per graduate will vary where some may bring a few guests and some be allowed more than ten guests. Please email Dr. Herbst with your list of guests. If you have more than ten guests, Dr. Herbst may contact you to visit about the number you plan to bring in order to keep within our 250 limit. More than ten guests cannot be guaranteed.
PLEASE EMAIL YOUR LIST OF GUESTS (Names) to aherbst@usd444.com. Please do so by Monday, July 13th.
Each guest is highly encouraged by the Rice County Health Department to wear a mask at the commencement ceremony, but not required. Families will be required to sit in a seating arrangement that facilitates social distancing from other families. Seating will be arranged in pods to ensure social distancing.
Upon arrival graduates will check in at the south commons entrance. Guests will check in at the north commons entrance.
Pictures will be taken throughout the ceremony. Every effort will be made to live-stram the ceremony. Some restrictions on numbers that can view could occur. More information regarding a link to view will be sent out if we are able to livestream.
At the conclusion of the ceremony graduates and guests are asked to exit the building in a timely manner.
Thank you for your patience and support as we ensure the graduates are honored as they deserve. We understand this is not ideal, but feel it will be a special day for our graduates given our current circumstances. If you have questions, please email Audrey Herbst at aherbst@usd444.com.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. Herbst & Mr. Garrison

Important message to parents regarding School Closure and COVID-19.
https://core-docs.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/623131/MESSAGE_TO_FAMILIES.pdf

With the COVID-19 precautions being taken in our state, there have been several questions about the cancellation of Little River High School Junior Senior Prom. At this time, we are exploring the matter on a day by day basis. Our intention is to allow prom to take place as scheduled, but the safety of our student body is our first concern. If the need arises to cancel or postpone prom due to COVID-19, we will take action as necessary. Parents who are questioning whether or not to order a tux will have to make that decision individually. In this unique circumstance, it has been decided to show some flexibility with the usual prom dress code. It would be acceptable for students to wear nice slacks, a button dress shirt, and tie in place of a tux. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

HUGE THANKS to Peoples Bank and Chris Herbst-Long McArthur Ford, they will be paying for all 7-12 Students to get into the State Basketball Game BOTH FRIDAY AND SATURDAY! Students must enter through main gate no later than 15 minutes before game time.

After Azim’s Trip (A Follow Up)
On February 10th Azim Bazarov left for Houston; it was his first stop on his day trip to Washington. Azim said that he thought it was really interesting how Washington was focused around “European architecture” and how drastically different it was from a small town in Kansas being more of an “official” city. People running around in suits and politicians were at every turn. He made the remark that, “It didn’t look like a typical American city.” He visited several different landmarks while in Washington such as presidential memorials, the White House, and the Smithsonian Museum, just to name a few. All in all Azim thought that Washington was “Pretty Awesome.”
Azim also met with other students from the foreign exchange program along with a few diplomats. He said that he really enjoyed speaking with other students and adults about politics in both America and other countries. “It was really interesting to hear their opinions.” He mentioned that “Everyone was really nice and more than happy to answer questions.” He said that the difference between our cultures was very stark but it was interesting to see how diverse everyone on the trip was and how cultures mix and how it doesn’t matter who you are.
-Zeke Zeller, Junior at LRHS

On Friday, February 16th, the Video Broadcasting and 21st Journalism classes went to Topeka to participate in Mass Media day at Washburn University. While there, the students learned about what the University had to offer and a small experience about how classes worked and what their programs were like. They received free lunch and got to see most of the campus. Even though they had to wake up at 5 a.m it was an enjoyable experience for all of them.
