Dear Parents/Guardians,
This letter is to inform you that there will be two assemblies for students in the near future
regarding safe use of social media and bullying prevention. (The bullying presentation will only
be with high school students, however, we are in the process of scheduling an assembly
specifically for junior high and will notify you when those dates are confirmed). These
assemblies will take place on Monday, September 17th, at 10:15 A.M. and Monday, October 1st,
at 8:15 A.M. in the auditorium.
The reason for these assemblies is due to a correlation of a rise in social media use with an
increase in reports of bullying across the state. As a result we feel it is our duty, as a school, to
help educate students in the safe practices of social media as well as the consequences of such
use. The assemblies will include the following:
“Social Media- Nothing is Private” by SGT. Lee Kolbeck of the Dodge City Police
Department and Student Resource Officer with Dodge City High School.
- Posts made with several different social media platforms- such as Facebook, Instagram, and
Snapchat
-Potential risks with posting photos and types of photos, how strict your privacy settings are, and
the consequences of the misuse of social media.
H.E.A.R. - “Helping Everyone Achieve Respect”-by SFC George B. Villarreal and SSG
Kenneth L. Boice with the US KS Army National Guard
-The many forms of bullying behavior are defined
-Detailed case studies (male & female) allow students to explore inappropriate behavior and its
consequences
-Students consider what can be done differently to minimize bullying and enhance respectful
behavior.
-Strategies to prevent and respond specifically to cyberbullying are discussed.
-10 questions inspire students to partner with educators in efforts to build a safer and more caring
place to learn.
